Each person gets his or her vocation from God, and singleness or being married figure prominently into those things. Neither is greater or lesser than the other. <br /><br />Regarding Christians, because I think they&#39;re the worse offenders in the outcasting of &#39;singlehood&#39;, I think part of the problem is that contemporary American Christianity has no tradition of singleness as a venerable path to holiness and service to God. &quot;It is not good for man to be alone&quot; is taken to mean that marriage is God&#39;s intended state for humanity, rather than communion with one another in the image of the Trinity. That&#39;s what happens when monasticism is banished from church life. Not that you have to be a monastic to be single--that&#39;s not what I mean. But having monks and nuns present in the church body, or within one&#39;s tradition, serves as a constant reminder that being single is a dignified and honorable state. Surely there is a wonderful place for lay single people in the life of the Christ&#39;s body.<br /><br />And then, of course, some people have difficulty comprehending that there are more paths to contentment and happiness than the one they&#39;ve found. Why is it assumed that everyone should be aching for romantic relationship? It shouldn&#39;t be. I agree. I say, as a married man, there&#39;s more to life than that. I say that it&#39;s a gift to be single, it&#39;s a gift to be married, it&#39;s a gift to be a monk, if that&#39;s what you&#39;ve been called to.
